I have found a lot of great and interesting music just following the path from the Dead's covers . That early 60's period has much more going on, in all kinds of music , than what used to be the standard line from the Rock history people, who used to view the post-Elvis in the army, pre-Beatles period as a wasteland .
When the Dead covered some of these songs, they were not often all that old .
Good Lovin;' was a hit around the time the Warlocks formed . Lovelight was not some ancient blues song, but from 61 . Of course time, in that period went a lot faster ! There is eons of difference in music between 61 and 66. These days it takes decades for the amount of change that transpires say in 65-67 ! It is funny, Sha Na Na was at Woodstock performing songs that were viewed as nostalgic in 69, that were, in some cases less than a decade old . Oh, yes "Happy Days" was that fake 70's idea of the 50's . Don't get me started !
